Haydn’s trio No. 25 is without doubt his most well-known trio, nicknamed Gypsy probably because of the familiar Rondo finale in Hungarian style. Dvorak’s trio in F minor is a magnificent work, most likely the one where the influence of Brahms is the most felt. One of his more mature works, this trio allows us to appreciate Dvorak’s great skill as a composer.

We welcome an opportunity to hear some rarely played music by Swedish-Finnish composer Bernhard Henrik Crusell (1775-1838) As well as a composer he was also a famous clarinetist; that explains why the three clarinet quartets heard in this concert make virtuosic demands on the player.

Beethoven’s beautiful Kreutzer sonata needs no introduction to chamber music lovers. We will also hear in this recital three of Fritz Kreisler’s charming pieces as well as Grieg’s no less beautiful third sonata for violin and piano, the most popular of the three and the last one he wrote. One can recognize Scandinavian folk elements in the melody and rhythm but the harmony remains in the Romantic style.

Among the gems of the romantic chamber music repertoire, the Trio No.2 was written in memory of Tchaikovsky when Rachmaninoff was not yet 21 years old. One can already hear the beautiful melodies and the virtuosic writing for the piano typical of his later works. Shostakovitch’s first piano trio was also a youthful work written when he was only 17 and dedicated to Tatyana Glivenko, the love of his life for the next ten years. The trio is in one single movement and bears the imprint of a romanticism that Shostakovich will abandon in his more mature works.

In his trios Beethoven departs from Mozart and Haydn by adding a fourth movement, extending the length, deepening the emotional expression and giving almost equal roles to each instrument. Schubert’s only original composition for the flute was written for a virtuoso and borrows it’s themes from the well known cycle "Die schöne Müllerin". This is only part of a very interesting program offering great music for flute bassoon and piano.
